6 Years....

Back in September of 2005 I started blogging. I had been blog-hopping for a couple of years under the strange name of SQT. I got that name by starting out as SactoQt (I'm from the Sacramento area) but the name didn't roll off the tongue and I shortened it to SQT and it stuck. Since then people have tried to figure the name out and, inevitably, they try to stick me with the nickname SQirT-- thankfully that hasn't stuck.

I flirted with different blog ideas but landed on the Fantasy/Sci-fi thing because I liked it-- nothing deeper than that. I was (and still am) a stay-at-home mom in dire need of a hobby. So I wrote. Sometimes I think I've written well-- and other times I cringe when I look as past posts. But overall I'm happy with what I've accomplished over the last six years. I'm not the biggest blog: I don't market myself. But I do get a lot of free books-- so there's that. I've never been overly fond of my blog name-- it's more of a description-- but once I saw the blog name alongside a review in the front cover of a Barb Hendee book I knew the name was staying; and I'm fairly proud to say it's shown up on a few book covers since then.

It's strange looking back to six years ago. There weren't that many book-bloggers back then. I was told at one time that the average lifespan of a blog is one and a half years-- I wonder if that's still true? I find that strangely reassuring when I see brand new blogs with more followers than me-- I'm slow but steady. I'm the tortoise and they're the hare.

I don't know about other bloggers but my blog has been life altering in a way; a small way to be sure-- but still. My spare room is filled with books and it's not unusual to see me sitting at my computer trying to compose a review. It keeps me busy and, in no small way, keeps me happy.

So thank you to those of you who have done me the courtesy of stopping by and commenting once in a while. It may seem like a little thing but it is appreciated, and it keeps me going. It gives me a sense of accomplishment to write and a minor sense of importance to think anyone actually cares about my opinion on anything. Just so you know-- I care what you think and feel privileged to have made your acquaintance.

That is such an accomplishment! Congratulations! I found your blog when I first launched my sci-fi/fantasy blog and it was so cool to find someone who held a lot of the same views I did. I really enjoy your writing and I'm always keeping up with your blog (even though I may not comment all the time! :) )

I've been blogging (both the genre blog and my beauty/fashion one) for two years this month and it has changed my life drastically! It's the launchboard to my new career so it's very inspiring to see someone who has been in the game as long as you have! :)

thanks for sticking it out. I think most people have said all they can say about a subject after blogging about it for 1.5 years or regular posting.

Congrats! Six years is a long time.

@McGriff- I agree- there's something about finding people who share your interests. No one in my "real" life likes the same things I do, so it's great to find an online community that "gets" me.

@Blodeuedd- I must admit I get a little aggravated when I see people kind of just pop-up and have the knack of driving traffic to their blog. But, like I said, I'm the tortoise. I'll still be here when they've burnt themselves out.

@Budd-- That's why I do the reviews. After awhile it's hard to think of anything new to say, but there's always something to review. I try to add original content on a regular basis, but it's not always easy.

@Maurice-- Thanks!

You are doing great. Six years is big accomplishment..that is dedication. So do you still live in Sacramento? I live in sac also and always like having local book crazed or craft crazed friends. We could hookup for a spot of tea! (i don't do coffee ha ha). personally I really like your blog much more than many I follow. There simply aren't enough sci fi and fantasy ones. Sometimes I find some pump out alot of the same posts. It gets tiring.

ogh yes you should stop by my dusters blog..she is giving away a zombie plush bunny she made. We both love to read and craft...she makes way more things than I do. http://rinnisplayground.blogspot.com

I'm happy to have gotten to know you through this blog, and appreciate your allowing me to contribute to it. I think I've been reading F&SF Lovin' since around 2008, and contributed my first review in June of 2009 - and still enjoy doing that to this day even when other internet writing of mine began to feel like "work" (and I already have a job). Anyway, it seems to me in general that the blog has continued to grow - so here's to another 6 years!

Wow . . . 6 years is a long time to be blogging, but the dedication definitely shows. I know I can always rely on you to open my eyes to a few new reads.

Congrats, and here's to 6 more!

Congratulations and kudos!

Six years is a long time for a blog. I started my own blog 17 months ago which means I'm not far away from the average life span of a blog.
To be honest with nearly 400 followers your blog is not that small. I have 64 followers. But I'm not envious. I can't expect more with one regularly post per week.
As you I like what I'm doing and as long there is someone who will read our posts we should continue.
I'm sure I can visit your blog for many years.

Enjoy reading!

@Pabkins-- I'm in Rocklin-- we should definitely meet up for tea. I don't drink coffee either :)

@Stephanie-Thanks!

@Jim- Has it been that long? Man, time flies. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the help you've given me.

@Sally-- Thanks! I'm kind of amazed that I've made it this long myself.

@Edi- The ones that blow me away are the people who only post once a month or so and have over 2000 followers. I wish I could do that.

Congrats!
Your blog is one of the better reviewblogs out there imo.
And it's quality that counts in followers not quantity. I often see blogs with hundreds of followers that have fewer comments than you get on your posts.

I agree with others that have said your blog is one of the better review blogs out there. This is totally true. And happy birthday. When my book gets published in 2013 I plan on sending you an ARC in the hope you'll review it.

@Michael-- I look forward to it.

@Anime-- I'm lucky you found me. :)

Happy blog birth day! This website is the most unique website out there because of one major fact: THE MAJORITY OF THIS WEBSITE'S COMPETITIONS ARE OPEN WORLDWIDE!!!!!

Yes that means even a person from the far flung islands of Fiji has a chance to win something whenever there's a book competition :)

It also helps that I love sci-fi, and the book reviews here helps me out whenever I'm trying to figure out what good space opera sci-fi to read.

This is one of my favourite websites. Here's to another 6...00 years of blogging :)

Congratulations! I've been doing mine for just under, or is it just over? - 3 years. I don't get anything out of it (not even free books), in a tangible sense, but I like doing the reviews and I find it actually gives me a richer reading experience.

Pabkins said...

- See you already jumped up to 400 followers from what mid 300's from when I saw your page this morning? Or am I losing my mind?

Barbara E. said...

Congrats to your six years of blogging, and hope you are able to keep it up for many more. I enjoy your site and plan to stick around as long as you keep writing it.

@Melissa-- Thanks! It's like a child; you can't believe how quickly it grows.

@Wilson-- That's actually been very cool for me. I mailed a book off to Finland last week. Over the years I've shipped to Saudi Arabia, Israel and pretty much every country in Europe-- among many others. It's amazing how we can connect to other people across the world so easily.

@Elfy-- Three years is pretty impressive. For the longest time I couldn't read a book without thinking about how I'd review it. I finally have gotten to the point where I can just read and just watch something and attack it later.

@Pabkins-- I was at 398 this morning-- so I got two more followers today. I'll take it!

@Barb-- Thanks! And I look forward to seeing you around.

Congrats on 6 years. I'm gonna have to look and see how long I've been at it, certainly more than the "average." Yeah, blogging has definitely changed my life, and introduced me to some great folks. I'm still enjoying and will keep on until I'm not.

SQT said...

@Jamie-- Thank you!

@Jessica- I appreciate that.

@Charles-- I bet you've had a long run too. I think I've known you for most of my blogging life.

Congratulations on 6 years blogging! Yours has consistently been one of my favorite blogs to read since I discovered the world of book review blogs. I can't even imagine seeing my name on a book cover, that had to have been such a great moment for you! I hope to continue to enjoy your blog for many more years.
