Blog Review

Soap Box Jury did a review of my blog (at my request) and gave me a 7/10. Apparently the C grade was due primarily to my busy sidebars. Should I scale back on them? I don't plan on getting rid of the 3 column template, but I could lose some of the content on the sides if I need to. I may also have been graded down based on the copious amount of posting. I wonder if he's suggesting I need to get a life?? Tell me what you think.

I'm a "plain jane" and not one to "commercialize" but it is YOUR blog... I guess it depends on where you want to go with it. It is after all YOUR BLOG!!
Since I like the subject matter in your posts, I tend to ignore the sidebars.

I know some that I read are getting "to busy looking" and to many colors going on and it's distracting to a slow reader like me lol... but I do think people will go by content more than anything else... and you have great posts! If you think on it.. the other blogs you read, do you go back because you like what you read or because of how it looks?

I go back for a good read.

I think you probably ought to ignore any review which contains the phrase "literature isn't really my thing", especially if said review is laboring under the misapprehension that your blog is a literature blog and not, as its title rather gives away, a sci-fi and fantasy lovin' blog...

Here at Hey there, Skippy we love this site and feel that you may feature in this week's Reader Appreciation posts...

Thanks guys.

I'm kind of funny in that I like sidebars. I tend to sxplore them at length when I visit other blogs. I'm fascinated by superfluous content.

YOU have busy sidebars???
Compared to WHO??

Riiiiight.

Too many posts? Does he realize it isn't just you...we all don't have lives???

I thought of that when I read the review. I'm guessing the guy doesn't like the column template. But I like being able to cram as much info onto as small a space as possible.

:D

I think the critic should have found someone else to review this blog. The person, who admittedly knows little about writing, also knows little about science fiction and fantasy. Fixating on Star Wars doesn't, in my opinion, qualify the reader to understand what the posters on this blog have tried to achieve.

Let me give my own review:

This is a fun site. It may not always be for the serious or critical student of science fiction and fantasy, but it can provide a diversion or on occasion provoke thoughtful discussion.

The team approach to this blog is one of its strength. The number of posters means variety of opinion and frequent postings. Click on one day to the next, and there's always something to get your attention.

Thanks for your take on it Stewart.

I never intended for this to be a scholarly or serious site. Heck no!

I wanted it to be fun more than anything. I just got lucky in that others seemed to get where I was going with in and wanted to join in.

It wouldn't be nearly as interesting if I didn't have various posters on here. I can only come up with so much nonsense to post.

I love your nonsense SQT! :)
That's one of the reasons I come back here every day, not only to see what kind of conversation is going on in the comments of older posts, but also to see what new stuff y'all have come up with to talk about today. And heck, I snaked some of your sidebar links, and I got into the whole "rent my blog" thing 'cause I saw it here, so you get 10/10 from me :D

Thanks Asara

Actually the guys review doesn't really bother me. I know my blog isn't for everyone.

I do think content should count for more though. Some of the blogs he reviews get high marks based mostly on appearance but don't seem to have much else going on.

But I admit I ask for the reviews just to get traffic to the blog. I like having people comment and I wouldn't mind having more contributers.

Calm down all of you - it's just a bit of fun! Theresa asked for a review which I delivered. People who ask for a review get a screenshot, a backlink, a paragraph of comment and bit of publicity - that's all we promise! That's what this blog got. Maybe if I had a lot of time to review blogs I would wade through each individual post and disect it in surgical detail. Sadly I have a busy life apart from blogging - the reviews get the time I can spare.

No worries Tom. I just wanted some input from other bloggers to tell me if I should scale back on the sidebars or do any other "fixes."

I know it's all in good fun.
